This year's Cannes Film Festival, which opens May 11, will bring sophisticated red carpet looks, show-stopping makeup and glamorous hairstyles to the South of France. Ahead of the opening, Stéphane Bodin, Cannes consultant at Dessange hair salons -- an official festival partner -- runs down some of the hottest hairstyles in store for the 2016 event, so beauty addicts the world over can slip into Cannes style this spring.
The Cannes Film Festival is a glamorous international event that draws the world's most beautiful women to the South of France. As fashion fans wait to take in this year's lineup of couture dresses and smoldering makeup, hairstyles are also a key part of sophisticated Cannes style, both for daytime and evening looks.
For the 2016 edition, Stéphane Bodin and Claudia Zocco -- Dessange's chignon and updo experts -- have showcased a selection of this year's hottest red carpet hairstyles, unveiling major trends for the four key moments in a typical Cannes day for stars at the event. Style inspirations run from bohemian vibes to laid-back looks, chic styles and -- of course -- full-on glamour.
Laid-back chic for daytime looks
For a relaxed vibe after the festival's action-packed evenings, guests and artists often let their hair rest during the day with minimal styling. This year, stars will be going for laid-back daytime styles that don't take hours in front of the mirror.
The Dessange experts suggest the "Flave" -- or flat wave -- as a great natural look for arriving at the hotel, for example. To get the flave, spray hair with texturizing spray then twist strands one by one into Princess Leia-like cinnamon buns against the head. Blast for a few seconds with the hair dryer then unroll the strand.
Stars then continue a marathon day at the festival with interviews on the Croisette strip. Here too, there's little point stepping out with a super sophisticated hairstyle. It's better to go for relaxed chic with a "Pun" -- a cross between a ponytail and a bun. To create this must-have look, straighten hair then tie up in a high ponytail. Roll one strand from the ponytail around the hair elastic and fix in place with a pin. Next, separate the ponytail into two parts, twist each one in a different direction. Then, twist them together and bring up over to the front of the head and pin in place.
Rock ‘n' roll glam for evening looks
The most eagerly awaited and star-studded moments of the festival include the famous red carpet walk up to the Palais des Festivals, followed by glamorous evening events and parties. This is where guests pull out all the stops to shine in the Cannes spotlight.
For the red carpet, Stéphane Bodin recommends creating a chic bob effect with an asymmetrical finish. This sees one side swept back smoothly against the head while the other is finished with glamorous curls. Spotted on fashion-week catwalks, the asymmetrical bob became a hot look for Hollywood nights. It's therefore no surprise to see it land in Cannes, in a version that ramps up glamour.
Start by parting long hair in a low side parting, then curl all the hair. Next, tie hair in a low ponytail, leaving a few curls loose at the front on one side of the face. Then, tuck the length of the ponytail up underneath to create a "bob" effect and pin in place.
The final look for this year's festival is a knotted updo that's perfect for post-red-carpet dinners. Hair is knotted together in several sections then brought up on top of the head and pinned in place for a glamorous, rock ‘n' roll style.
