Amar Singh Chamkila's First Wife Gurmail Recalls First Reaction To His Death: 'I Saw His Face...'

Amar Singh Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail Kaur opened about the late singer’s death in a recent interview. Chamkila died on March 8, 1988. He and his second wife, singer Amarjot were murdered in in Mehsampur, Punjab, where they were supposed to perform. In an interview earlier this month, Gurmail revealed that family found out about his death through the news and word of mouth. She also revealed she visited his house and saw his mortal remains.

“We didn’t have phones back then. I heard the news through the news and word of mouth. My parents first sent a person to confirm the news. When that man returned and confirmed the news, then we went to see them,” Amar Singh Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail said in an interview with Love Punjab.

She also shared that the last time she met him was just a day or two before he was shot. She added that Amarjot was with him and the ladies were cooking when she sensed something was not right. “We met him a day before his death. At the time, it was raining a lot,” she recalled.

“Amarjot and I were in the kitchen and we watched him get drenched in the rain. I felt his face was different, I thought it had turned black. I looked at his face in different intervals and his face continue to look black,” she said in Punjabi. “When I saw his mortal remains, it was the same black face that I was seeing the last time I saw him,” she added.

Chamkila’s story was told on the screen recently by Imtiaz Ali. Titled Amar Singh Chamkila, the director released a biopic of sorts to narrate the life and tragic death of the singer. The role was played by Diljit Dosanjh while Parineeti Chopra played the role of his wife, Amarjot.
