After over a decade, the Russo family is making a comeback to their magical world. In January of this year, Disney announced The Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, a spin-off and sequel to the original series. Selena Gomez and David Henrie will reprise their roles as the chaotic siblings Alex Russo and Justin Russo from Wizards of Waverly Place. In May, fans got their first glimpse of the characters through released pictures, sparking excitement among fans. Now, David Henrie shared his thoughts on reuniting with Selena Gomez for this project.
“It was awesome. We didn’t want it to end. It was great. She’s so good. She has such a quick wit that’s only gotten stronger. It felt like we didn’t miss a day. We have a couple of scenes that I think will choke up the original fans of the original show, they’re really touching, and they went really well. So, I’m excited for you to see it,” he told US Weekly.
Further, he also expressed joy over reuniting with his TV dad, David DeLuise (Jerry Russo), and shared that he hopes the show will have everyone back, “And we hope to have everyone back throughout the lifetime of the show, and if it’s up to me, as often as possible, ’cause they’re just such a wonderful addition,” Henrie continued.
It is pertinent to note that while the show will focus on an older Justin Russo with David Henrie reprising his role, Selena’s Alex is likely to return as a guest star. Sometimes, something magical happens when you do get to go home again,” the singer-actor said at the Disney Upfront event.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’s Release Date
The reboot series is expected to premiere on the Disney Channel and Disney+ at the end of this year. However, a confirmed release date is yet to be announced.
This time, the story will revolve around how Justin tries to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, wife Giada and kids Roman and Milo, when his sister brings Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) back to him, seeking help for the young wizard in training. Their first-look pictures from the show’s set have been unveiled.
The original show ran for four seasons from 2007 to 2012, winning Emmys and doing well in the ratings. The Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie also took place at the same time in 2009.
