Super Bowl 2024 treated fans to the much anticipated trailers of several upcoming films and none created a buzz quite like Deadpool 3, titled Deadpool and Wolverine. The trailer, launched during the game, is setting the internet on fire, especially with the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, making it the most eagerly awaited movie. While the trailer itself was intriguing, the spotlight fell on the presence of Matthew Macfayden, an Emmy and Golden Globe winning star renowned for his role in HBO’s Succession. Although his role was initially undisclosed, the recently released trailer revealed that Matthew will be playing the character of TVA (Time Variance Authority) agent Paradox, adding an extra layer of excitement among fans.
For a long time, TVA was rumoured to appear in the MCU films and Marvel fans will recall that TVA first appeared in Loki series, which is dedicated to safeguarding the Sacred Timeline. Meanwhile, in the trailer, Macfadyen’s character is shown recruiting Deadpool for a mission and gives him the opportunity to become a “hero among heroes.” However, as the trailer progresses, questions arise about their relationship, especially when an anti-hero is shown fighting TVA agents later on. The trailer hints at twists and turns in the storyline, leading to speculations that Paradox could be the secret antagonist in the film.
In the comics, Paradox has a minor role and as a Time Variance Authority agent, his powers are limited yet nearly supreme. In one instance, he almost erases Jennifer Walters, also known as She-Hulk from history as a consequence of her trying to manipulate time by warning Hawkeye about his death. Despite his limited comic portrayal, it seems Marvel is taking Paradox to newer heights by turning him a central character in Deadpool 3.
In addition to the speculation surrounding Matthew Macfadyen potentially playing a villainous role in Deadpool and Wolverine, there are reports suggesting that Emma Corrin is also slated to be one of the central villains in the upcoming film. Prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Crown star expressed enthusiasm for their upcoming role. In an interview with Empire Magazine, she expressed her excitement about playing a villain. Despite being aware of the project, Marvel’s team provided no details and left her curious.
Deadpool and Wolverine, featuring Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds is scheduled to release on July 26, 2024.
