Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are gearing up to delight Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans in Deadpool & Wolverine. Their iconic characters, Wade Wilson and Logan, will be teaming up to battle a common enemy, Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin from The Crown. While fans are already intrigued by Corrin’s appearance, in a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, she shared some fascinating details about her character’s inspiration. According to Corrin, Nova is a blend of Gene Wilder’s quirky and unpredictable Willy Wonka from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Christoph Waltz’s Nazi villain Colonel Hans Landa from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
Corrin explained, “Ryan and Shawn (Levy) pitched this idea, which I was totally on board with, ‘We want this villain to not be a villain in the sense that you expect them to be. We want you to be so endeared by her, so charmed by her, and just when you think that maybe she’s totally seen into your soul and you are going to be best friends for life, you’re dead’. They wanted her to be unpredictable.”
Talking about taking inspiration from Christoph Waltz’s character, Emma Corrin added, “He’s so disarmingly polite and nice and unaffected and it’s really creepy. It’s all the more sinister because he doesn’t need to do anything.”
In the comics, Cassandra Nova was initially believed to be the twin sister of X-Men founder, Professor Charles Xavier. However, it was later revealed that Nova is actually an alien parasite. Although she was born without a physical body, she has similar superpowers like Xavier, which she used to fight against mutants. The upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film will be the first time Nova will appear outside the comic book world since her debut in 2001’s New X-Men 114.
It’s already confirmed that Lady Deathstrike, played by Kelly Hu in X2: X-Men United, Aaron Stanford as Pyro from X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, alongside Sabretooth, played by Tyler Mane, will be making a return in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie. There’s also strong buzz about the appearance of more X-Men characters. Rumours suggest that Jennifer Garner’s Elektra might have a major role in the movie, alongside Taylor Swift, who could appear as either Dazzler or Lady Deadpool.
Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Stefan Kapicic, Brianna Hildebrand, Rob Delaney, Lewis Tan, Aaron Stanford, Kelly Hu, Tyler Mane, Jason Flemyng and Ray Park.
