Director Imtiaz Ali received a standing ovation at the premiere of Amar Singh Chamkila. The film, which stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, is set to release on Netflix. Ahead of the release, the OTT platform along with MAMI Mumbai Film Festival hosted a premiere of the film in Mumbai. While Diljit and Parineeti couldn’t attend the special screening, Imtiaz was present in the room, standing in the back while the audience enjoyed the film. As the film concluded, the audience erupted in loud cheers and applause.
The Amar Singh Chamkila premiere was attended by Shabana Azmi, Mrunal Thakur, Sunny Kaushal, Daisy Shah, Mahima Makwana, Avneet Kaur, Pratik Sehejpal, Piyush Mishra, Sheeba Chaddha, Bhuvan Bam, Mrunal Thakur, Zanai Bhosle, Ajaz Khan, Moses Kaul, and Rohan Shah, among others. Watch the video below:
Speaking about the premiere, Imtiaz said, “It is an exhilarating experience to screen Amar Singh Chamkila for so many film enthusiasts at the screening today. We are overwhelmed by the love that the film has received so far and with the release of the film just around the corner, the team is extremely excited to share the film with Netflix audiences worldwide!”
Shweta Basu Prasad and Ishwak Singh, who attended the screening, praised the film. “I’ll definitely recommend other people to watch the movie. It was like a live concert film. I just know the person (Amar Singh Chamkila) so much better. I think people should watch it for Diljit, Imtiaz sir and the music. It’s so well-made,” Shweta said, in a video shared by the MAMI team. “It has to be on everyone’s must-watch list. It’s a very special film. It’s very inspiring, moving and rooted. And, it’s got Imtiaz Ali’s spunk and wildness,” Ishwak added.
Amar Singh Chamkila is based on the life of Punjabi vocalist who met a tragic end at the age of 27. While Diljit plays the titular role, Parineeti plays the role of his wife, Amarjot.
