Imtiaz Ali’s latest directorial venture, Amar Singh Chamkila, is about to be released. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles and the cast has created quite the excitement among fans. However, Imtiaz Ali recently revealed that he was not sure about casting Diljit in the film.
“I also feel when I watch them together or separately that I couldn’t have imagined or there could’ve been nobody who could’ve played Chamkila or Amarjot except for Diljit and Parineeti. However, I wasn’t sure whether it’s gonna work out with Diljit for some reason. I thought he might not be able to do it, etc. So I didn’t approach him in the beginning, but it’s a little later that I did, the moment I spoke to him, it was just like a different chapter, and now it’s a sure shot thing, and now I really can’t imagine anybody else doing it,” Imtiaz Ali told Pinkvilla.
Speaking about the appreciation Diljit’s look in the film is getting, Imtiaz Ali said, “In a way, he has been preparing for Chamkila ever since he was born because he was born in those parts. Diljit is also from Malwa, from Punjab from a smaller place like he knows that language; he knows what it is to be an artist in Punjab and rise he knows about Chamkila much before I got to know. He knew everything. Like he spoke to me, the first thing he said was that there are many people in this world who think they are the biggest fan of Chamkila, and I’m also one of them.”
However, speaking with News18 Showsha earlier this month, Imtiaz said that he couldn’t imagine anyone but Diljit and Parineeti in the lead for the film. “It was mandatory for me to cast actors who are singers as well. It was important for them to sing live. This film wouldn’t have been possible without them. It’s not like Diljit didn’t train a lot like Parineeti did but he does live singing and is used to it. They both recorded the songs after singing them live. The reason behind this is that I’ve never had singers singing live during a shot. I thought that in case, the live singing doesn’t work out, we can always use the recorded version and use it as playback like we usually do,” he told us exclusively.
The film is produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films. The music of the film is on Saregama. Amar Singh Chamkila premieres April 12, on Netflix.
