Mark Ruffalo, known for his portrayal of Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has announced his return as the Hulk in the upcoming film Captain America: Brave New World. This revelation came during a discussion at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Ruffalo’s reprisal of the iconic character sets the stage for an epic clash with Samuel Leader Stearns, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson. This encounter marks the first meeting of these two characters on the big screen in over 15 years, promising an exciting showdown for fans when the movie premieres in theaters in 2025.
Although a standalone Hulk movie may not be on the horizon, as Ruffalo hinted during the conversation, his return alongside the new Captain America, Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie), signifies a continuation of the character’s journey since his origin, initially portrayed by Edward Norton in 2008. Ruffalo’s recent voiceover work for the Hulk in What If…? Season 2 also hints at his ongoing involvement, with his last on-screen appearance dating back to 2022’s She-Hulk.

Brave New World promises to show the evolution of the Hulk character and may even feature a thrilling confrontation between Hulk and General Ross, played by Harrison Ford, in his Red Hulk persona.
However, major details about the plot of Captain America: Brave New World remain under wraps. Building on the foundation laid by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the film is expected to dig deeper into Sam Wilson’s journey as he steps into his role as the new Captain America and gains the trust of the public.
Director Julias Onah has teased the film’s tone as a paranoid thriller, and recent reshoots, overseen by Moon Knight writer Matthew Orton, aim to deliver the best possible version of the movie. In addition to Ruffalo and Nelson, Liv Tyler’s return as Betty Ross adds further anticipation to the Hulk’s cinematic resurgence.
Amid rumors, Tatiana Maslany’s potential appearance as She-Hulk alongside her cousin Bruce Banner is a topic of discussion among insiders. While a second season of She-Hulk seems unlikely, Marvel’s strategy to elevate the character’s prominence in the MCU could lead to her involvement in Brave New World and possibly Daredevil: Born Again, given the connections established with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). Other confirmed cast members for the film include Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, with Shira Haas joining as Sabra, alongside Xosha Roquemore and WWE’s Seth Rollins.
Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled to premiere in theaters on February 14, 2025, promising an action-packed addition to the MCU lineup.
