Miley Cyrus Faces Lawsuit Over 'Copying' Of Bruno Mars' Hit In Grammy-Winning Flowers
The complainant argues that Flowers replicates numerous components from the Mars song, including the chorus, harmony, melody, chord progressions and lyrics.

Miley Cyrus is currently involved in a legal battle over allegations that she copied elements from Bruno Mars’ music for her Grammy-winning hit, Flowers. According to documents obtained, Tempo Music Investments has reportedly filed a lawsuit claiming that Cyrus’ 2023 single bears substantial musical similarities to Mars’ 2012 ballad When I Was Your Man. The investment firm, which asserts ownership of a portion of the copyright for Mars’ track, argues that Flowers replicates numerous components from the Mars song, including the chorus, harmony, melody, chord progressions and lyrics. They also allege that these similarities were “intentionally” incorporated into Cyrus’ song.

Interestingly, Bruno Mars himself is not listed as a plaintiff in this legal action, informed Page Six.

Cyrus’ recent Grammy wins, which saw Flowers awarded Record of the year and Best Pop Solo Performance, were a significant milestone in her career, surpassing other notable artists like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish. Reflecting on her wins, Cyrus expressed, “This award is amazing, but I really hope that it doesn’t change anything, because my life was beautiful yesterday.” Further during her acceptance speech, she added, “Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world is spectacular, so please don’t think that this is important.”

Rumours suggest that Flowers was inspired by her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth, whom she was married to from 2018 to 2020.

In a candid interview with W Magazine in June, Cyrus spoke about her frustration with the delayed recognition from the Recording Academy. “No shade, but I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and this is my first time actually being taken seriously at the Grammys?” she said. “I’ve had a hard time figuring out what the measurement is there, because if we want to talk stats and numbers, then where the f–k was I? And if you want to talk, like, impact on culture, then where was I?” she asked, Page Six reported.

Despite her frustration, Cyrus clarified her position by saying, “This is not about arrogance. I am proud of myself.”

Starting her career at just 12 with Disney Channel’s popular show Hannah Montana, Cyrus transitioned to a successful music career with hits like Party in the U.S.A. and Wrecking Ball.
