New Delhi: Punjabi film industry in its current form is an actor's dream. There's actually nothing that an actor dreams and it can't be translated on the 70 mm to cater to its domestic and international audience.
From producers showing no reluctance in adhering to a big budgets to filmmakers using right marketing strategies and making NRI films, no stone is left unturned to ensure Punjabi projects find several takers. And going by the issues that Punjabi films have dealt with in the recent past, directors have succeeded in promoting the language, culture, and also received a positive feedback in India and abroad.
Besides iconic singers Gurdas Maan, Wadali brothers and Lakhwinder Wadali, who have played a key role in contributing to the promotion of Punjabi showbiz industry, Harbhajan Maan has also left a huge impact with his films. And with his upcoming film 'Gadaar -The Traitor', which he refers to as the "first (Punjabi) suspense and emotional thriller", Harbhajan is hopeful of setting a new benchmark for Punjabi films.
Unlike the characters that he has played in the past, Harbhajan promises to amaze the viewers with his versatility. "With 'Gadaar -The Traitor', I play a character who is very intense and lives life on the edge. To him, life and death don't matter. Why he is like this? What instances that had happened in the past made him so? These are the questions to which the viewers find answers as the movie unfolds," says Mann.
Since the film revolves around the life of a NRI business tycoon (played by Harbhajan), who is accused of being a traitor, it also highlights certain violent instances that happened in the past. "No, we haven't shown any riots. Just that there are a few personal matters in the life of the character I play that don't let him live in peace. Woh kya hai? Woh kyun hai? These doubts introduce an element of suspense."
Interestingly, it isn't just Harbhajan's never-before-seen look, but also the stunts that he has performed in the film that makes 'Gadaar' a must watch.
"Gadaar -The Traitor is a big-budget film. This is the first time that an amount close to 10 crore has been invested in a film shot in Toronto, Goa, Mumbai and Punjab. We have hired the best of the technicians for the film, which is quite evident from the quality of the shoot. We have also paid attention to the film's presentation, and its digital posters. The film's trailer has already got over half million hits, which explains its impact. One song, featuring Dr Zeus and Evelyn Sharma, was shot in Rs 50 lakhs. So yes, we have introduced several new things to make this project a success. Agar Punjabi films ki market ko bada karna hai, aur popular karna hai toh humari films Bollywood aur Hollywood projects ki tarah bann ni chhaiye."
The film has been produced by Saga-Unisys infosolutions and Grandson Films. Unisys, an entertainment, technology and music company having an in -house solutions, with their marketing skills and stronghold in film distribution will play an instrumental role in giving give Gadaar the platform it needs to be released.
It will be interesting to see how the industry responds to the transformation which will be evident from how films are made, and what marketing strategies are followed to ensure Punjabi projects garner huge popularity before the release.
