Veteran paparazzo Varinder Chawla recently reminisced about the complex yet endearing relationship between the late actor Rishi Kapoor and his son, Ranbir Kapoor, with Mumbai’s ever-eager paparazzi. Varinder recounted a particularly memorable incident when, in a humorous twist, an inebriated Rishi Kapoor volunteered to pose for a photographer instead of his son, showcasing the unpredictable and heartfelt exchanges that often occurred between the Kapoors and the media.
Varinder recounted an incident where one of his photographers, determined to snap Ranbir Kapoor, decided to stake out outside Ranbir’s house. After waiting for over six hours, Rishi Kapoor emerged with a glass in his hand and engaged the photographer in a surprisingly gentle conversation, “It was late in the night. Rishi sir might have seen him on his CCTV camera. He came out of his house, he had a glass in his hand and asked him why he was sitting around. So my photographer replied to him by saying that he was there to click Ranbir’s photo,” he recalled during a conversation with YouTube channel Hindi Rush.
Varinder continued, “To which Rishi said that he won’t come out now. But my photographer was adamant, he said he wants his photo, so Rishi said, ‘He won’t come out, you click my picture and leave’. Then when my photographer told me what had happened, I told him ‘teri kismat acchi thi (you are lucky), he must be in a good mood that he spoke to you so much otherwise you’d get two three slaps from him.”
Rishi Kapoor departed on April 30th, 2020, following a prolonged battle with leukaemia. Fondly referred to as Chintu Ji, Rishi Kapoor left an indelible mark on the Hindi film industry. From his debut in Mera Naam Joker to his final film Sharma Ji Namkeen, he captivated audiences with his exceptional performances and charismatic persona.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Ranbir was last seen in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal. He recently signed Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War with Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. The actor will also be seen in Nitesh Tiwari’s highly-ambitious project Ramayana, also featuring Yash and Sai Pallavi.
