Sophie Turner Says It's 'A Struggle Being A Single Mother', Talks About How Her New Show Has Helped
The Game of Thrones star explained that playing Joan had a significant impact on her, especially when she needed to be ambitious and have the strong will to push through challenges.

Sophie Turner recently opened up about the challenges of being a single mother after her split from Joe Jonas. While promoting her upcoming series, Joan, the actress discussed her experiences raising her and Jonas’ two daughters, Willa, 4 and Delphine, 2. The show focuses on the life of a single mom and jewel thief in the 1980s, which Turner found relatable. “If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it,” Turner shared.

While talking to the Sunday Times, she added, “It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter.”

Turner, 28, emphasised how crucial it is for children to understand the hard work parents put in for them. She began filming the series before Jonas, 35, filed for divorce in September 2023.

The Game of Thrones star explained that playing Joan had a significant impact on her, especially when she needed to be “ambitious” and have the “strong will” to push through challenges. “Joan gave me a lot of strength,” Turner said, adding that the character also “taught me how to do a good ring swap in a handbag,” she joked.

Turner reflected on the societal pressures of motherhood, noting that there is often “shame” attached to being a mom. “There’s so much shame that comes with motherhood,” she said. “You go to work, you’re shamed. If you don’t go to work, you’re shamed.”

Turner and Jonas got married in a 2019 Las Vegas ceremony and decided to go their separate ways after four years of marriage. Not long after, rumours swirled that Turner had left Jonas and their daughters to party, something she denied in a candid interview with British Vogue. She described those reports as leading to “the worst few days of her life” and stated that she had “never been a partier,” reported Page Six.

The former couple also became embroiled in a contentious custody battle, with Turner filing a lawsuit accusing Jonas of withholding their daughters’ passports and preventing their move to the UK, a plan they had agreed upon before separating.

A spokesperson for Jonas called the claims “misleading at best.” Eventually, the two were able to resolve their custody issues through mediation, and Turner dropped the lawsuit. Sources later revealed to People that the two are “friendly and great co-parents now.”

Sophie Turner has since moved on with British aristocrat Peregrine Pearson, while Joe Jonas has been seen with model Stormi Bree and actress Laila Abdallah.
