Dhanush and his ex-wife Aishwaryaa’s divorce announcement in 2022 took fans by surprise, as the couple had been married for 18 years before deciding to part ways. Despite their separation, Dhanush has spoken fondly of his former wife in past interviews. In a conversation with a media outlet, he praised Aishwaryaa, stating that she is “100 times simpler than her father.”
In a throwback interview with Times of India, Dhanush reflected on the factors that brought him closer to his then-wife Aishwaryaa. When asked about whether being Rajinikanth’s daughter was the reason for the actor’s feelings for his former wife, Dhanush said, “I don’t see her (Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth) like that. I like her simplicity. If you think her father is simple, meet Aishwarya. She is 100 times simpler than her father. Aishwaryaa treats everybody as an equal and can be friends with anybody. I like the fact that she is bringing up our sons extremely well.”
ICYDW, Dhanush and Aishwaryaa tied the nuptial knot in an arranged setup on November 18, 2004, in a grand ceremony. Two years after the wedding, the couple embraced parenthood for the first time in 2006. Later, in 2010, the couple’s family was completed with the arrival of their younger son, Linga. Even Aishwaryaa’s father and legendary superstar Rajinikanth shared a warm bond with Dhanush and the comments made by them for each other on various occasions are a testament to the same.
Everything between Dhanush and Rajinikanth seemed fined until they broke the news of their separation through social media posts. The post read, “18 years of togetherness as friends, couple, as parents and well-wishers to each other. The journey has been of growth, understanding, adjusting and adapting. Today we stand at a place where our paths separate. Aishwaryaa and I have decided to part ways as a couple and take time to understand us as individuals for the better (sic).”
Later, in April 2024, the former couple officially filed for divorce, parting ways legally as well. Notably, ever since the divorce, the couple left no stone unturned to ensure that their sons spent enough time with both of them. The kids reportedly live with their maternal grandfather Rajinikanth.
Earlier this month, when Rajinikanth’s film Vettaiyan hit the theatres on October 10, Dhanush made sure to catch it in theatres on the first day, first show. A video featuring the actor along with his ex-wife Aishwaryaa and the whole family watching the film at Rohini Silver Screens in Chennai was also shared on X. Dhanush even dropped a post on X encapsulating his excitement before heading to watch the film.
