They say fame doesn’t come easily. An actor has to work hard to earn it and even harder to maintain it. Bollywood has seen some actresses who are blessed with evergreen charisma. One of them is a superstar who was once rejected by almost every actor in Bollywood. She made her way from being a junior artist to supporting roles to leading roles. This actress didn’t give up on the dream of becoming a superstar and after years of striving, she became one of the highest-paid actresses in showbiz.
Mumtaz started her film career at the age of 11 with Sone Ki Chidiya in 1958 and played small roles in films like Stree and Sehra. Her first role as an adult was in OP Ralhan’s Gehra Daag. After that, she got small roles in hits like Mujhe Jeene Do.
The actress had to face several rejections before becoming a superstar. When she appeared on Indian Idol, Mumtaz revealed that no hero was ready to act opposite her. Mumtaz was rejected by almost all the male actors in Bollywood. Until one actor put his faith in her and gave her career a boost.
The actor who boosted Mumtaz’s career was Dara Singh, the late veteran professional wrestler, actor and filmmaker, who gave her a chance to star opposite him in Faulad. Later, she did 16 more films with the late actor including Veer Bhimsen, Tarzan Comes to Delhi, Sikandar-E-Azam, Rustom-E-Hind, Raaka and Daku Mangal Singh.
Mumtaz did 10 films with Rajesh Khanna and all of them were blockbusters. Her chemistry with Kaka in Do Raaste, Aap Ki Kasam, Roti, Sachaa Jhutta and Bandhan was appreciated by the masses.
Mumtaz married businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974, and had two daughters. Their daughter Natasha has been married to Feroz Khan’s son, Fardeen Khan, since 2006. Mumtaz is considered one of the greatest actresses in Indian cinema. Since retiring from acting, Mumtaz has lived with her husband in London.
