R Madhavan starrer Kannathil Muthamittal will complete its 22 years this month. It was written and directed by Mani Ratnam. It starred R Madhavan, Simran, Nandita Das and PS Keerthana in the lead roles. The story of the movie revolves around the reunion of a daughter with her mother during the civil war in Sri Lanka.
The movie won numerous awards after its release in 2002. This Tami movie also used the Eelam Tamil language which is the native language of Sri Lankan Tamils. Nandita Das, who played the pivotal role in the movie, was required to speak Eelam Tamil language for the movie. However, she had no idea about the language so Mani Ratnam hired another actress for her dubbing. Can you guess the name of the actress? It was none other than the renowned actress and music composer, Sukanya.
Sukanya was at the peak of her career during the 1990s. She starred in various blockbuster Tamil films. She is also well-versed in Malayalam and Telugu languages. As most of the lead actors were non-native Tamil speakers, the dubbing artists were used for the movie.
Mani Ratnam approached Sukanya for dubbing in the film. He knew that Sukanya could speak the Eelam Tamil Language. Along with her, actress Deepa Venkat was also hired by the makers to lend her voice to the actress Simran. The music of the movie was composed by AR Rahman. It collected a National Award in the Best Music Direction category.
The Kannathil Muthamittal story revolves around the efforts of Madhavan and Simran to reunite their adopted daughter with her mother. PS Keerthana played the role of a child artist in the movie. The trio goes on a quest to find the mother of Keerthana in the war-torn Sri Lanka. After a long struggle and injuries, Nandita Das ( Role of adopted daughter mother) meets her child whom she lost during the war. At last, the mother bids goodbye to her daughter as she decides to stay back in Sri Lanka to secure peace in the nation. Nandita Das debuted in the Tamil film industry with this movie. PS Keerthana also won the National Award for her role in the film.
