Why Amitabh Bachchan Considered Leaving Bollywood Before 1973 Film Zanjeer
Amitabh Bachchan had to face 11 consecutive flops when he considered quitting acting.

For the last five decades, Amitabh Bachchan has been considered one of the biggest stars the Indian cinema has produced. Earning the title of the Shahenshah of Bollywood, he is a globally influential figure in the world of entertainment. But there was a time when he was at his lowest career-wise and even contemplated quitting the film industry altogether.

As per reports, the veteran actor had to experience 11 consecutive flops when he considered quitting acting. Prominent screenwriter Salim Khan gave more insight on the Zanjeer actor’s career, in an earlier interview.

According to Salim Khan, after 11 consecutive flops, Amitabh Bachchan’s breakthrough came through his appearance in Zanjeer, the 1973 release. The screenwriter revealed further that Amitabh Bachchan was not the first actor to be considered for the lead role in Zanjeer. Actors like Dharmendra, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand were also considered by the makers for the role, but they could not do the film due to personal reasons.

Salim Khan stated, “It was a matter of destiny because the script was ready with the dialogues.” He mentioned that they wanted Dharmendra but he did not do it, saying, “something that I always feel a bit sad about”. He revealed that when he asked Dilip Kumar which film he regretted not being a part of, the late actor replied with Zanjeer.

Salim Khan and his former writing partner Javed Akhtar were very impressed with Amitabh Bachchan’s work in films like Bombay To Goa, Parwana and Raaste Ke Patthar. However, the director of Zanjeer, Prakash Mehra showed reluctance in signing the actor for the film. Reportedly, the reason for that was his series of unsuccessful releases, before this project.

The Sholay writer added that his projects failed due to their quality, as they were “bad films”. He added, “He was also new, he was a good actor with a good voice and personality.” According to him, the actors have to take the blame for a failed release, which happened with Amitabh Bachchan. So, the veteran actor considered leaving the industry after his 11th unsuccessful release.
