Eva Mendes is showering praise on her partner, Ryan Gosling, following his Oscar nomination for his role as Ken in Barbie. Mendes took to social media to express her admiration and defend the actor, by calling out those who questioned his “ken-ergy.” She shared a screenshot of a 2022 Rolling Stone opinion piece that considered Gosling’s acting as ‘cringe’ and highlighted the negativity he faced when taking on the role. Despite the initial backlash, according to Mendes, the La La Land star delivered a unique, humorous and touching performance that earned him an Oscar nomination.

The actress expressed pride in her man and highlighted his ability to turn a challenging role into an iconic character. Meanwhile, Gosling’s fellow Barbie co-star America Ferrera also lauded the actor for his performance.

The previous article, mentioned in Mendes’ post, criticised Gosling’s appearance as Ken and described it as cringe-worthy. The article questioned about Mattel’s reaction to Gosling’s first look, commenting on his platinum hair, denim vest and Calvin Klein-inspired underwear. The article further compared the actors’ look, raised eyebrow, tanned abs and Ken boxers, to an older West Hollywood man trying too hard to appear younger.

Giving a perfect reply to haters, Eva Mendes wrote, “So proud of my man. So much hate when he took on this role. So many people trying to shame him for doing it. Despite all the #Notmyken ridicule and articles written about him, he created this completely original, hilarious, heartbreaking, now iconic character and took it all the way to Oscars. So beyond proud to be this Ken’s Barbie.”

Reacting to Eva Mendes’ post, Ryan Golsing’s Barbie co-star America Ferrera wrote, “He is brilliant as Ken. Pulled off a triple somersault performance. We’re so lucky it was him and I’m so grateful for the way he showed up with his super stardom and continues to show up to support all the women in this process. He is a class act and insanely deserving and talented.”

Despite criticism, audiences applauded Ryan Gosling for his outstanding performance as Ken, praising his comedic timing, dedication to the role and particularly his memorable act in I’m Just Ken song. Interestingly, Gosling is now a three-time Oscar nominee, as he previously received nominations for his roles in Half Nelson and La La Land. In the upcoming Oscars, he will be competing in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category alongside Sterling K Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Robert Downey Jr (Oppenheimer) and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things).

Eva Mendes’ Instagram post praising Ryan Gosling came a day after his statement about the 2024 Oscar nominations. Although the actor was thankful for his nomination he was also disappointed over the absence of Barbie’s director Greta Gerwig and lead star Margot Robbie in the Best Director and Best Actress categories.
