It is the 100th birth anniversary of Dev Anand, the charismatic icon of Indian cinema. He was born on September 26, 1923, in Gurdaspur, Punjab. Dev Anand, originally named Dharam Dev Pishorimal Anand, made an everlasting impact on Indian cinema with his exceptional acting skills, magnetic on-screen charm, and a career that spanned more than six decades. Dev Anand’s break in the film industry came in 1946 when he was cast in Prabhat Talkies’ film Hum Ek Hain. Though the film did not catapult him to stardom, it opened the door to more opportunities. It was his role in Ziddi (1948), opposite Kamini Kaushal, that marked his arrival as a promising actor. His portrayal of a young and rebellious man in Ziddi won the hearts of audiences, and he started getting noticed.
The Honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, took to X (formerly Twitter) to remember the cinema icon. Sharing his photo with the late actor, the PM wrote, “Dev Anand Ji is remembered as an evergreen icon. His flair for storytelling and passion for cinema were unmatched. His films not only entertained but also reflected the changing society and aspirations of India. His timeless performances continue to influence generations. Remembering him on his 100th birth anniversary.”
