Vaibhavi Merchant, a highly acclaimed National Award-winning choreographer, has been dazzling the Hindi film industry with her creative dance moves for over two decades now. Known for her dance sequences in films like Dhoom 3 and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, she has consistently earned praise for her inventive choreography. Recently, she choreographed the dance number Leke Prabhu Ka Naam in the widely successful Tiger 3, featuring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. This dance sequence, much like her previous works, garnered immense popularity. In a recent interview with DNA, Vaibhavi opened up about her experiences working with Bollywood’s biggest stars. She also addressed the controversy surrounding the colour of Deepika Padukone’s bikini in the extremely successful Besharam Rang from Pathaan.
Vaibhavi choreographed Besharam Rang in Pathaan, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, earlier this year. Despite the song becoming a major hit, it faced severe criticism and trolling for allegedly having communal undertones due to Deepika’s saffron-colored bikini.

Reflecting on the controversy, Vaibhavi shared, “I have become immune to both criticism and praise. You get to know that a majority of people have liked it and there are a handful who will troll out whether it is part of their nature or their agenda."
“Whatever happened with Besharam Rang, eventually in hindsight, it did what it needed to do, which is it generated not just a conversation but created havoc. The good part is that the people who believed in it were answering on all our behalf, people realised that it is completely baseless and unnecessary," she added.
She further expressed that the radical nature of the criticism amused her as there are more pressing global issues than the colour of an actress’s costume.
Coming back to her most recent work, she spoke about working with Katrine Kaif and Salman Khan. Vaibhavi fondly mentioned that she has known Katrina since before her entry into films. She says she has witnessed Katrina’s remarkable growth and unwavering work ethic since their early collaborations on films like Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Dhoom 3, and Ek Tha Tiger.

Addressing the challenge of making Salman Khan Dance, Vaibhavi explained, “It is a challenge for anyone to make him dance if you give him steps out of his comfort zone in terms of his body language, body structure. Our cinema is about envisioning our superstars to come and do something which is beyond larger than life, and that’s what I always attempt to achieve."
