Amid ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches, a threat mail received by Mumbai Police threatened to blow up Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat’s Narendra Modi stadium, where several international cricket matches are being held.
In the threat mail, which was initially sent to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the sender sought Rs 500 crore and the release of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to stop the attack. Bishnoi is currently lodged in a Delhi jail.
The threat mail also stated that militants had already been deployed to carry out the attacks.
“We will blow up Narendra Modi and the Narendra Modi stadium as well if the government fails to pay us Rs 500 crore and release Lawrence Bishnoi. Everything sells in Hindustan, so we too have bought something. No matter how much you secure, you won’t be able to remain safe from us. If you wish to talk, do so on this email,” Hindustan Times quoted in its report.
The police official told HT that all concerned agencies had been alerted about the mail and they were able to get the email ID from which the message was sent.
The police further said that the preliminary probe found that the email originated from Europe and it appears to be a hoax or mischief played by someone sitting in a foreign country.
However, the security forces have launched a manhunt for the sender, and the security of all cricket matches will be reviewed and beefed up if the need arises.
This comes after a threat was issued by Khalistani separatists about turning the World Cup into a “World Terror Cup.”
The cybercrime branch of Ahmedabad police registered an FIR on September 29 against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), for threatening to turn the cricket World Cup into “World Terror Cup”.
After the alert, the security of the stadium was beefed up and about 3,500 police personnel were deployed at Narendra Modi stadium in Motera during the opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup on October 5.
