Afghanistan scripted one of the biggest upsets in ODI World Cup history by defeating defending champions England by 69 runs at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. It was a spirited show from Afghanistan as they outclassed a star-studded England side while defending a 285-run target. The spin troika of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi spun their web around the English batters who failed to get going as Afghanistan won the match by 69 runs.
It was a jam-packed Arun Jaitley Stadium as the fans enjoyed a thrilling contest of cricket.

The Afghan side also ended their 14-match losing streak in ODI World Cups. The only other win for Afghanistan in the tournament was way back in 2015 against Scotland at Dunedin. It was the first time Afghanistan managed to beat England in the 50-over format.
The cricket fraternity and fans were elated to witness Afghanistan staging a sensational upset in the World Cup.
Wonderful all-round effort by Afghanistan led by a solid knock from @RGurbaz_21.Bad day for @ECB_cricket.Against quality spinners, you have to read them from their hand, which the England batters failed to do. Flamboyant opening batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit a blistering 80 as Afghanistan, buoyed by some lusty late hitting, made 284 against defending champions England.
Afghanistan’s last four wickets yielded a crucial 94 with the recalled Ikram Alikhil making 58. Gurbaz, 21, piled up his runs off 57 balls with eight fours and four sixes to register his eighth score in excess of fifty in his brief ODI career.
Chasing the target, England lost Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root early which derailed their chase. The defending champions failed to get going after that as Harry Brook fought the lone battle with his 66-run knock but he didn’t get much support from the other end. Tailenders Adil Rashid (20), Mark Wood (18) and Reece Topley (15) hit some boundaries in the end but it was not enough as England were bundled out for just 215.
