“You won’t find a Bhaiyya like me, you will remember me when I go away.”
These two statements by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the last 48 hours in public rallies have become the cynosure of all attention in the poll-bound state. Chouhan’s candidature has so far not been announced by his party, which has also decided not to go with any Chief Ministerial face in the forthcoming assembly elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi named Chouhan in his public meeting in Gwalior on Monday, along with Union ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Congress had earlier taken a dig at Chouhan asking why the PM had not named him during his last visit to the state.
At a public meeting in Khargone two days ago, Chouhan said he was not hungry for any post. “I have no greed for any post. I only run this government so that I am of use to the women and children of the state. I am working to help everyone,” the CM said. In Sehore on Sunday, the CM said he does not run a government but a family. “All of you are my family. You won’t find a brother like me. You will miss me when I go away,” the Chief Minister told people in Sehore.
Meanwhile, the Congress has started taking potshots at the CM, asking whether these are his words of farewell after being ignored by his party in the elections.
To be fair, the CM in his speeches has also made a case on what all he will do if the public chooses him again. Chouhan has said he will give more to the people in his next term.
At a rally on Monday, Chouhan said he does not run a government but a family, and he is a brother to the women in the state. “Arrangements have been made to provide gas cylinders to the sisters for Rs 450. District collectors have been instructed to make gas connections in the names of sisters. Big electricity bills are being reduced to zero. Ladli Behna Yojana has brought changes in the lives of sisters and their respect in family and society has increased. I start every programme by washing the feet of sisters and daughters and giving them respect so that people understand that we should respect sisters and daughters in our day-to-day conduct,” the CM said on Monday.
