Despite being infected by the COVID-19, Ranjim Prabal Das from Assam was determined to crack the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2021. He is among six students from across the country to have secured 100 percentile score in the JEE Main 2021 February session. Over 6.5 lakh students had registered to appear for the entrance test.
In an exclusive interview to news18.com, Ranjim said, it was his love for problem solving that helped him sail through. “I love solving problems and challenging questions. During my studies too I did not prepare timetable as per number of hours but based on number of topics I wanted to cover. I spent as much time as it was needed to understand a topic. While preparing for entrance exams, it is important to have through conceptual understanding,” he said.
“Since I was affected by the pandemic in November last year it had only made me brave. I followed all the precautions but having been infected made me focus on the exam and it took the fear away and uncertainty away,” he said.
While he was expecting a good score, Das said it was a surprise to have scored 100 percentile. “I will now not appear for the remaining attempts as it would not make as big a difference. My aim now would be the JEE Advanced – entrance test for IITs. I love programming and want to study computer science or electronics engineering from IIT-Delhi,” said the 18-year-old.
Das’ family had shifted from Assam to Delhi when he was younger and he has been studying in the National Capital Region since then. He had prepared for the exam by taking coaching from Aakash Institutes here, claims Das, who started taking coaching classes from class 11 onwards.
“When I started preparing, I used to start attempting by easy section first followed by tough ones. But now I have built speed and I take on exam serial wise and tend to leave questions which take more time than usual for later,” said Das, who claims solving multiple sample papers helped him gain speed and analyze his performance.
“I find solving difficult problems to be an engaging task. I always wanted to do something related to engineering. I draw inspiration from Elon Musk. He focuses on unique and innovative problems. I too want to come up with tech-based innovations which are out of the ordinary,” he said.
Apart from NCERT, he studied MS Chauhan, Neeraj Kumar for chemistry; HC Verma and I.E Irodov for physics, and Ghanshyam Tiwari for mathematics. He also solved previous year JEE question papers. “One needs to clear concepts but it is always better to solve a problem as it gives more insights into application,” Das recommended his peers.
Das’ father is a doctor by profession and his mother is a homemaker. He has a younger sister who is studying in class 9 currently and aims to study medicine.
