PV Sindhu stormed into the women’s singles final of Swiss Open 2021 on Saturday with a comprehensive victory over Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt. Sindhu defeated Blichfeldt 22-20, 21-10 in just 43 minutes to reach the final of the tournament. She awaits the winner of the other semi-final between Carolina Marin and Pornpawee Chochuwong. Sindhu has been in good touch this tournament and will look to take the big title.
On the other hand, Kidambi Srikanth was knocked out from the semi-final by first seed Viktor Axelsen. Axelsen registered an easy 21-13, 21-19 over Srikanth to show him the door in just 41 minutes.
The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty also bowed out of the tournament with a 10-21, 17-21 loss to fifth seeds Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen. It took the Danes just 44 minutes to get past the Indians. With that, Sindhu will be the sole Indian on the last day of the tournament.
Sindhu’s win over Blichfeldt was a controlled won. It started with both the players feeling each other and staying neck-and-neck on the scoreboard. However, Sindhu pulled away a bit to take an 11-8 lead at the break. After the break, Sindhu maintained her stronghold and went up to a 17-12 lead before giving it all up to go back on level terms at 17-17. From there, the Indian won the next three points to get three game points. However, Blichfeldt saved all of them and forced Sindhu to bring up another game point, which the Indian converted.
The second game began in a similar fashion only this time Sindhu was more dominating. Not letting Blichfeldt get a sniff, the Indian raced off to an 11-6 lead at the break. It was all Sindhu in the second half of the second game as she let the Dane get only four more points before taking the game 21-10 and hence, the match.
In Srikanth’s match, Axelsen started off in a dominating fashion racing off to a 6-0 lead. The Dane never let Srikanth settle and brought up points after points to comfortably take the first game.
The second game was more of a battle overall but initially it was the same story. Axelsen got a 9-2 lead early on and went into the break with a massive 11-3 lead. From there he took a 16-10 lead but it was at this point that Srikanth woke up from the slumber and strung six straight points to make it 16-15. There was a little exchange of points after that but at 19-19, Axelsen won the next two points to win the match.
