'Trophy Which You Want to Keep on Your Head...': Mohammed Shami 'Hurt' After Mitchell Marsh's Viral Picture With World Cup
Mohammed Shami isn't a fan of how Mitchell Marsh posed while resting his feet on the ODI World Cup trophy.

Mitchell Marsh drew the ire of some social media users after a picture of him resting his legs on the ODI World Cup trophy.

Though it was perhaps just a celebratory gesture, Marsh’s action did not go down well with a section of cricket fans who felt the cricketer had disrespected the silverware.

Now, star India pacer Mohammed Shami has shared his opinion on the matter.

Speaking about the topic to the media, Shami revealed that he was hurt after seeing the viral picture of the Australia allrounder.

According to him, the World Cup trophy is something that deserves a place on the top of a cricketer’s head, not under his feet.

“I am hurt. The trophy for which all the teams in the world fight, the trophy which you want to keep on your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy,” Shami told reporters.

Australia captain Pat Cummins was among those who shared that picture of Marsh on his Instagram story.

Australia toppled an unbeaten Indian side to secure their sixth ODI World Cup title on November 19 in Ahmedabad.

In the picture, Marsh was seen sitting casually on a sofa and enjoying a drink, while also flaunting his champion medal. He had his feet resting on the World Cup trophy.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) later also shared the same photograph on Instagram, highlighting the “vibe” in the Australian camp.

During an interaction, Shami spoke about his memorable outing in the recently concluded ODI World Cup.

The Indian speedster finished the campaign as the leading wicket-taker, fetching 24 scalps in seven matches. He missed the first four league games but was called up after allrounder Hardik Pandya sustained an unfortunate ankle injury.

“When you sit out for four matches, you need to be mentally strong. Sometimes you are under pressure but when you see the team performing well and going in a good direction, it gives you satisfaction,” Shami said.

During the conversation, Shami also spoke about his mindset ahead of any game.

While the majority of the bowlers generally check the pitch conditions before going into the match, Shami loves to stay away from that additional pressure. “I never go close to the wicket because you will get to know how it behaves only when you bowl on it. Then why take the pressure? It’s best to keep it simple and keep yourself relaxed. Only then, you will perform better,” the 33-year-old said.

Shami is the first Indian bowler to take 50-plus wickets in ODI World Cups. He is also the quickest to achieve the feat in the competition’s history.

In his 18 appearances in the multi-nation tournament, Shami has picked 55 wickets in total.
