Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been accused of being selective with investigations into the deaths of citizens where foreign interference has been alleged. Trudeau has publicly accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar — a claim rejected by New Delhi – but has been silent about two deaths allegedly at the behest of China and Pakistan, respectively.

Sources in Canada told News18 that Trudeau has been selective with investigations into the killing of Chinese-origin Wei Hu and Pakistani-origin Karima Baloch.

Wei Hu, 57, was reportedly the target of a CCP campaign called Operation Fox Hunt which was designed to silence dissidents. In Hu’s case, Operation Fox Hunt was trying to return Hu to China over alleged financial crimes.

A witness told the police that Hu was being targeted by the CCP following which British Columbia’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) launched an investigation.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police declined to comment on Hu’s case, but said they are “aware of foreign actor interference activity in Canada, from China and other foreign states”.

Trudeau’s election campaign is also alleged to have accepted money from the CCP. The PM reportedly refused to allow a public inquiry into Chinese interference earlier this year.

In another shocking case in 2020, Pakistani activist Karima Baloch was found dead in Toronto. She had been living in Canada since 2015 after terrorism charges were filed against her in Pakistan. Baloch had warned that her life remained in danger even in Canada.

Her death was investigated as a non-criminal case, angering Baloch activists who wrote a letter to the government expressing disappointment and anger.

Sources told News18 that the investigation has been almost closed given the proximity between the ISI and Khalistani groups that are close to the Canadian government.

Tensions have flared between India and Canada following Justin Trudeau’s explosive allegations of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, on his country’s soil on June 18 in British Columbia. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

India rejected the allegations as “absurd” and “motivated” and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa’s expulsion of an Indian official over the case.

On Thursday, India asked Canada to come down hard on terrorists and anti-India elements operating from its soil and suspended visa services for Canadians, as escalating tensions between the two nations over the killing of Nijjar pushed their ties to an all-time low.

India also asked Canada to downsize its diplomatic staff in the country, arguing that there should be parity in strength and rank equivalence in the mutual diplomatic presence. The size of Canadian diplomatic staff in India is larger than what New Delhi has in Canada.
