Mumbai: The war of words between the Shiv Sena and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi reached a new low on Wednesday.
Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna attacked Rahul Gandhi and accused the Nehru-Gandhi family of being anti-Mumbai.
An editorial in the newspaper by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray claimed that politicians from North India would never work in the interest of Marathi manoos.
"How can Rahul forget Karkare, Kamte, Salaskar and Ombale who were all Marathi? Politicians from north have always been anti-Maharashtra and they will never work in the interest of Marathi Manoos. Only Shiv Sena can save Mumbai from these politicians," the article said.
The editorial also called Rahul Gandhi a frustrated man.
"The Prince of Congress is totally frustrated and it is in this frustration he has insulted Marathi people and Maharashtra," the editorial said
The Sena also targeted Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin.
"Mumbai may belong to all Indians but how can it belong to an Italian mummy," the newspaper said.
Rahul Gandhi had on Monday slammed Shiv Sena's Mumbai-only-for-Maharashtrian agenda saying that the NSG commandos who saved the city during 26/11 terror attacks came from all over the country including North India.
"Who rescued Mumbai during 26/11? The NSG commandos came to Mumbai's rescue and most of them came from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh," Rahul Gandhi told Youth Congress workers in Bodhgaya on Monday.
But Shiv Sena quickly hit back with party Executive President Uddhav Thackeray saying Rahul’s comments were an insult to the memory of 26/11 martyrs like Hemant Karkare.
Uddhav said in a signed column in Saamna that Rahul had forgotten the Maharashtrian heroes like Hemant Karkare, Tukaram Ombale, Vijay Salaskar and Ashok Kamte.
