New Delhi: As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) takes on the government on a host of issues, the party is fighting an open battle at the top. Senior leader L K Advani on Thursday posted a blog expressing his discontent with party president Nitin Gadkarai.
Advani even blamed Gadkari of undermining the campaign against corruption. But what sparked his criticism of the BJP president and praise for Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley?
A manifestation of the changing power equations in the BJP reflected in Advani's weekly blog. The BJP patriarch singled out RSS nominated president Nitin Gadkari in his attack, questioning decisions like induction of Babu Singh Kushwaha into the BJP just before Uttar Pradesh assembly elections and party's handling of Karnataka and Jharkhand crises.
To sum it up, Advani said the mood in the BJP was not upbeat. If Congress is faltering, so are we, said the veteran leader.
Some BJP leaders called it transition pangs being felt in the party, with the BJP moving towards resolving the leadership issue in the post Vajpayee era.
Mumbai executive of the BJP last week in many ways defined attempt at settling long pending leadership issue, with a senior RSS functionary, Dattatreya Hosbole, thrashing out a truce between Modi and Gadkari. Sanjay Joshi was asked to quit executive. And the RSS in the process paved way for another term for Gadkari, despite reservations by Advani and a section of the party.
Officially, the party is downplaying any differences at the top.
If the BJP, backed by the RSS, has drawn a blue print for the generation next, where does it leaves old timers like Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi?
