Branding West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as an outsider in Nandigram, BJP leader and her former protege Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday asserted that people duped by chit fund companies in the state would get back their money if the saffron party is voted to power. Accusing Banerjee of trying to divide communities on religious lines ahead of the assembly elections, Adhikari said the TMC supremo had “incorrectly” recited the ‘Chandipath’ (holy text) here on Tuesday.
The chit fund scam happened because of the TMC government and its leaders “looted public money”, he alleged. “She (Banerjee) is an outsider in Nandigram. She does not even cast her vote here. I am not only the ‘bhoomiputra’ (son of the soil of Nandigram), but also a regular voter of the area.
“I have been with the people of this place for several years unlike Banerjee, who comes here only during polls,” Adhikari said, while inaugurating his election office. Nandigram Assembly constituency is set for a high- octane battle with Banerjee deciding to contest from the seat against Adhikari.
Adhikari played a recording of the Chandi path chants and compared it with Banerjee’s version. “Her Chandi-path was all over the place and mantras were wrong. Yogi Adityanath can chant correct mantras, he should be brought here once to correct Mamata Banerjee’s chants. I want Yogi-ji to come here and do that,” he said.
He further accused the West Bengal Chief Minister of “using Hindu dharma” for politics.
CM Banerjee on Tuesday took on the saffron party at Nandigram and said, “You cannot teach me Hinduism. I have shown you that I know the mantras to Goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kali and Durga. It is not how you do it, memorising some lines before the election and dropping them at meetings.”
Meanwhile, projecting CM Banerjee as an “outsider” surfaced in Nandigram on Wednesday, the high-profile constituency from where the TMC supremo is set to file her nomination for the assembly polls during the day. The posters with ‘Nandigram-Medinipur wants the son of the soil and not outsiders’ written on them in Bengali were put up in the assembly constituency.
Banerjee is pitted against her former confidante Suvendu Adhikari, who joined the BJP some time ago, in the Nandigram seat that will go to poll on April 1 in the second phase. Addressing a party workers’ meeting on Tuesday, she had said her decision to contest from Nandigram was prompted by the love for the local people.
Banerjee also said those who have “bowed in front of outsiders” are insulting the Nandigram movement by playing the communal card. Adhikari has often called himself “bhoomiputra” (son of the soil) while seeking to get back at the TMC supremo who has been targeting the BJP with the “party of outsiders” barb.
The TMC turncoat has announced that if he is not able to defeat the TMC supremo by 50,000 votes he will quit politics. Adhikari on Wednesday took out a rally in Nandigram where he will inaugurate a BJP’s office for the election.
Banerjee is expected to perform puja at a temple here and will hold a foot march before filing her nomination in Haldia. The TMC supremo had on Tuesday paid her reverence at a local Mazar, popular among members of the minority community here, and then offered prayers at ‘Maa Chandi’ temple nearby.
Adhikari is likely to file his nomination on Friday as a BJP candidate for the assembly polls.
