New Delhi: Maintaining that its stand has been vindicated on the Muslim quota issue, BJP on Monday welcomed the Andhra Pradesh High Court's decision to quash 4.5 per cent sub-quota for minorities within the OBC reservations.
"When these reservations were announced we had clearly said it is against the Constitution," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters in reply to a question.
A division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, comprising of Chief Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Sanjay Kumar, set aside the Office Memoranda (OM) for carving out the quota from the 27 per cent reservation for OBCs issued in December last year.
The court also expressed "anguish" at the "casual manner" in which the Centre had dealt with the issue. It maintained that Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians (Parsis) do not form a homogeneous group.
BJP, which had opposed the government's move to give sub-quota and charged that this was an attempt at minority appeasement for vote-bank politics, maintained that its stand has been vindicated.
"This court decision is a good development," Rudy said.
