Gurgaon: Following a Supreme Court order, former Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from a hospital in Haryana's Gurgaon district, officials said on Monday. Yadav was sentenced to life for the murder of CPM leader Ajit Sarkar 12 years back.
He was arrested after a bench of justices Markandey Katju and AK Patnaik expressed surprise on August 6 that Yadav had not been arrested even after his bail application was dismissed by the apex court on May 3.
"He was admitted in Artemis Hospital in Gurgaon since Saturday. The CBI team reached the hospital on Monday morning and after taking clearance from hospital (authorities) Yadav was brought out of the hospital at around 3 pm", a CBI source said.
"I wanted to surrender and informed the DIG (Deputy Inspector General of Police), Bihar, about my presence in the hospital. My operation was due on Monday", Yadav told reporters on his way out of the hospital.
"I will take court permission for the operation now", Yadav added.
Officials said Yadav will be produced before a Gurgaon court.
CBI officials said the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him two weeks ago.
