Imphal: Congress swept the Lok Sabha polls in Manipur winning both the prestigious Inner Manipur (valley districts) and Outer Manipur (hill districts) parliamentary constituencies.
While sitting Congress MP T Meinya retained the Inner Manipur parliamentary seat, defeating his nearest Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate M Nara by over 33,000 votes, party's (Congress) candidate Thangso Baite wrested the Outer Manipur parliamentary seat, defeating sitting MP and People's Democratic Alliance candidate Mani Cheranamei by over 29,000 votes.
Political observers said the Congress won both the seats in militancy-hit Manipur on its assurance that it would protect territorial integrity of the state and also initiate programmes for improvement of the condition of poor people.
However, leaders of the Opposition parties alleged that Congress, being in power, rigged polls and their appeal to the Election Commission for repoll of several polling stations went unheeded.
