Chandigarh: The Congress bagged the Chandigarh parliamentary seat, result of which was announced on Saturday.
Union Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal was declared elected to Lok Sabha from the union territory constituency, defeating his nearest BJP rival Satya Pal Jain by a margin of 58967 votes in a 14-cornered contest. The Congress had retained the seat.
Bansal polled 1,61,042 votes while Jain secured 1,02,075 votes. The candidates of BSP, RJD and JD-U besides nine
Independents also had to bite the dust. As many as eleven of the 14 candidates forfeited their security.
Bansal had taken an early lead of votes in the first few rounds and increased it in the subsequent rounds. With this win
he has achieved a hat-trick.
Bansal had won the seat in 1991, 1999 and 2004 and secured 35.89 per cent, 46.99 per cent and 52.06 per cent votes respectively.
