'Disclose Your Identity': Kolkata Police Probes Spoof Video Of Bengal CM Mamata; BJP Reacts

Kolkata Police on Monday demanded a social media user to disclose their identity after a spoof video went viral depicting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dancing to a song.

The video, which went viral on social media platforms, received hundreds of reposts on X. Responding to the viral post, Kolkata Police’s DCP Crime Branch earlier asked the user to reveal their name and residence details. However, a few hours later the state police deleted that post.

‘Disclose your identity’

The state police said failure to comply could result in legal action under section 42 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). “You are directed to immediately disclose your identity including name and residence. If the information sought is not revealed, you shall be liable for legal action u/s 42 CrPC. Cyber PS, Lalbazar, Kolkata, Ph no: 033-22143000,” the Kolkata post on X read.

BJP Reacts

Reacting sharply to Kolkata police’s demand for the removal of spoof video, BJP’s IT cell chief Amit Malviya said the state police has “more pressing issues on hand, rather than act like Mamata Banerjee’s doormat.”

“Relax@KolkataPolice- You have other more pressing issues on hand, rather than act like Mamata Banerjee’s doormat. For instance, TMC workers are assaulting women across Kolkata for having political views different from the ruling party or worse they have hung obscene posters deriding the Prime Minister across greater Kolkata area… What have you done about them?”

“@ECISVEEP should take note of voter intimidation by Kolkata Police. This is the same Kolkata Police, which hounded a Jadavpur University professor, for almost 10 years, at the behest of the Bengal CM, just because he shared a cartoon of Mamata Banerjee on WhatsApp. They are at it, again,” he said.
