EC pulls up Jaswant over cash distribution issue
BJP leader Jaswant Singh was caught on camera distributing money.

New Delhi: Election Commission on Saturday issued notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh for violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

The three-member Commission asked him to explain why action should not be taken against him for distributing money to voters in the Barmer constituency from where his son Manvendra Singh is the BJP candidate lok Lok Sabha elections.

The former finance and external affairs minister had contended that the Model Code of Conduct had not been violated since he was not the candidate from the seat.

But after viewing the tape of the alleged money-distribution incident the Election Commission has held a contrary view.

Jaswant had on Thursday met BJP prime ministerial candidate L K Advani to clarify on the issue of alleged distribution of cash by him.

Singh said that helping the needy was his duty and his family has been helping the poor but claimed neither he nor any other BJP leader had violated the Model Code of Conduct.

The administration of Rajasthan's Barmer district on Wednesday sent a preliminary report to the Election Commission on the distribution of money by Jaswant Singh.

Jaswant was on Tuesday caught on camera distributing money during an election meeting in Gajaria village of Barmer, about 550 km from Jaipur.

He will be contesting Lok Sabha elections from Darjeeling in West Bengal.
