Government may let Land Ordinance lapse on April 5: sources
Sources said that the aim is to try and get the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill passed in the second half of the Budget session.

New Delhi: After stiff resistance from the Opposition, the Narendra Modi government might let the Land Ordinance lapse on April 5, sources said on Wednesday. The decision was taken at a meeting attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi late Tuesday night where several senior ministers were also present.

Sources said that the aim is to try and get the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill passed in the second half of the Budget session of Parliament which would commence on April 20.

If the Bill is not passed in Rajya Sabha, then a joint session is likely to be called.

If the Bill in not passed before the due date then the ordinance promulgated will lapse and cannot be introduced again.

On March 17, high drama was witnessed in the national capital when united opposition marched against the Land Bill from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The march led by Congress President Sonia Gandhi was attended by leaders of 14 parties and appealed to the President to not clear the Bill.

The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015 was passed in Lok Sabha on March 9.
