Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday refuted allegation by some opposition parties that the state government had provoked the pro-quota agitation by Jats, terming it as baseless.
"Some political parties have alleged over the last couple of days that the Jat agitation was provoked by the state government on which the CM has said that such allegations are baseless, false and uncalled for," Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh.
Though admitting that the chief minister is in favour of reservation to Jats, he said as their demand was related to the Centre, she had asked protesters, who were blocking rail traffic at Kafoorganj railway station in the state, to go to Delhi and voice their grievances in a peaceful way.
"Jats are already included in the OBC list in UP. The CM said that she supported their demand of reservation in central services, but also appealed that as the demand was related to the Centre, Jats should go to Delhi and keep it peacefully and in a disciplined manner," Singh said.
He said that the CM had appealed to the protesters that there should be no loss of life or property during the agitation.
"She had also directed the officers to ensure that law and order situation was not disturbed and effective steps were taken by the government which finally led to the clearance of tracks by the agitators," the cabinet secretary claimed.
Singh said that the state has demanded 100 companies of central forces from the Centre to deal with any threat to law and order in future.
"Initially the state demanded 50 companies, which was not fulfilled. The state has again demanded 100 companies for future so that required stern action can be taken," he said.
