Medha Patkar-led Narmada Bachao Andolan to support AAP
Patkar refrained from clarifying whether she would contest elections for the party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Mumbai: Social activist Medha Patkar on Monday announced that the Narmada Bachao Andolan will back Aam Aadmi Party. She, however, refrained from clarifying whether she would contest elections for the party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking about the new brand of politics introduced by Arvind Kejriwal's AAP, Patkar said that the party had shown that politics could be clean and corruption free.

"AAP has taken up the cause of common people. No equality in India even though the Constitution guarantees it. We have been fighting for justice, equality for many years," she said.

When asked if she would join AAP, Patkar said, "We will need to consult a number of people leading various people's movement. We need to consult them." She added that a meeting regard this would take place on January 16 or 17.

Besides leading the Narmada Bachao Andolan, Patkar is one of the national convenors of the National Alliance of People's Movements -- an umbrella group of over 200 activist organisations across the country.

A handful of organisations part of NAPM had not agreed to joining AAP but there is unanimity on extending full support.
