New Delhi/ Mumbai: The BCCI on Sunday night suspended IPL chief Lalit Modi and served him a show-cause notice just minutes after the final match of the tournament got over in Mumbai.
Modi got two e-mails from the cricket board--the first was a show-cause notice and the second the suspension letter. The second e-mail from BCCI president Shashank Manohar told Modi he was being suspended “pending enquiry” for misconduct in IPL dealings.
He has 15 days to explain why the board shouldn't take disciplinary action against him. A committee of three or four members will take over the IPL’s management for six or seven months.
CNN-IBN learns Manohar and senior BCCI officials Arun Jaitley, Rajiv Shukla and Ratnakar Shetty framed the suspension letter and the show-cause notice against Modi.
Manohar released a press release late night in which he said the BCCI suspended Modi, for "he has brought a bad name to the administration of cricket and the game".
"The events of the last few days have thrown up lot of sad and unfortunate developments," Manohar said.
"While we rejoice and celebrate the great success of IPL season 3, the alleged acts of individual misdemeanours of Mr Lalit Modi, Chairman IPL and vice president, BCCI, have brought a bad name to the administration of cricket and the game itself."
Manohar said that he waited for the IPL to conclude before taking any action against Modi because he did not wanted to "disrupt" the tournament.
"Immediately after the conclusion of the IPL final, the BCCI secretary, Mr. N Srinivasan has in consultation with me issued a show cause notice to Lalit Modi under Rule 32 (iv) calling upon him to show cause within 15 days why disciplinary action should not be taken against him."
"Simultaneously in exercise of the powers vested in me under Rule 32 (vii), I have suspended Mr. Lalit Modi from participating in the affairs of the Board, the IPL, the Working Committee and any other Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India," Manohar said.
Modi has not accepted defeat though and made this clear in his short speech at the awards ceremony of the IPL final at D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. “We had some off field unpleasant dramas only based on half truths and motivated leaks from all type of sources. I assure you all decisions have been taken by all the members of the (IPL) Governing Council as one,” he said.
“If there is any flouting of any rules then it is taken in tandem with all the members of the governing council together. We should carry the legacy forward,” he said.
"As the Bhagwad Gita says fear not what is not real, never was and never will be. What is real always was and cannot be destroyed."
Earlier in the day, Modi had said that he would be attending the Governing Council (GC) meeting as the chairman and commissioner of the Indian Premier League.
"I will attend and chair the meeting of the GC as chairman and commissioner. I have issued the agenda to the GC," Modi's tweet read.
The cricket board slapped the suspension letter with the show-cause notice to prevent Modi from attending the meeting but he may now turn to the courts.
