There seems to be no end to bizarre political statements in the aftermath of the horrific lynching of a man in Dadri over rumours that he ate beef. In an interview to the Indian Express, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said Muslims can continue to live in India, but they will have to give up eating beef as the cow is an article of faith.
The report also says Khattar went on to describe the Dadri incident as a 'misunderstanding'. He claimed the victim made a hurtful comment about cows which led to the attack.
However, he also said that attacking and killing the person was also wrong and that those responsible for it could be prosecuted under several sections of the law. Though he said that even if the person was committing an offence under the law for which he should be punishable, attention should be paid to why he did what he did.
Coming in his defence, his OSD Jawahar Yadav said that his statement has been misunderstood. "The CM has not said anything like this, What he said has been distorted," he claimed
Under pressure from all quarters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on Dadri incident and said the fight should be against poverty and not against each other.
The remarks came after President Pranab Mukherjee raised concerns over the incidents of communal tensions in the country.
In a gruesome incident, 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was lynched following rumours that his family has consumed beef in Bishada village of Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.
