Bangalore: Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj forwarded a complaint to disqualify the Reddy brothers from the state Assembly on grounds of conflict of interest to the Election Commission of India on Wednesday.
"It is a fit case for reference to the Election Commission for its opinion under article 192(2) of the Constitution and therefore a reference has been made to the Election Commission of India for opinion in the matter," a Raj Bhavan statement said.
The Governor took the decision after Karnataka Tourism Minister G Janardhana Reddy, his elder brother and Revenue Minister G Karunakara Reddy and their close associate Health Minister B Sriramulu failed to appear before him.
The Governor had summoned Reddy brothers to Raj Bhawan but they called him a Congress agent and refusing to meet him and instead sent their advocates.
Congress leader KC Kondaiah had sent a complaint to the Governor in November 2009 seeking that the three ministers should be disqualified from the Assembly under the People's Representation Act.
Kondaiah complained that the Reddys run business worth several thousands crores in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. He also claimed that all the three ministers were in illegal mining in Bellary and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka and so they should not continue as ministers and MLAs.
The complaint also alleged that Reddys had been using government office to cover up their illegal deeds.
