Sultanpur: Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Saturday filed his nomination papers for Amethi parliamentary constituency in Sultanpur in presence of party President Sonia Gandhi.
Rahul, who arrived in Sultanpur on Friday evening, came in a cavalcade and was mobbed by enthusiastic party workers on the way to the district court where the nomination papers were filed.
Raising slogans hailing both Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, party workers showered them with rose petals and waved Congress flags. They were also carrying placards with pictures of Rahul Gandhi.
Both Sonia and Rahul later boarded an open jeep and greeted people on the way to the district court.
Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress Legislative Party leader Pramod Tiwari, Captain Satish Sharma and Sultanpur Congress candidate Sanjay Singh were also present during the filing of the nomination papers.
Rahul is seeking election from Amethi for the second time. He had won from here in 2004 by a margin on nearly 3 lakh votes. The constituency was also represented by his father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi several times.
Even now there are no real challengers and he is expected to win the seat easily. The real challenge for Rahul, however, is improving the Congress' fortunes in the state.
It is believed that it was on his insistence that the congress decided to go it alone in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Rahul also disclosed his assets as part of his nomination. The Congress leader has bank deposits of over Rs 10 lakh in various banks and also owns two farm houses in Mehrauli and Faridabad.
He also owns two shops at the Metropolitan Mall in Delhi's Saket Area and also declared that he owns jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh.
Meanwhile, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah reposed his faith in the UPA and said that Rahul Gandhi will eventually become prime minister.
"UPA will again from a strong government. UPA will get back all its allies who are right now leaving it and Rahul Gandhi will become prime minister one day," said Farooq.
