Patna: Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Saturday congratulated Rahul Gandhi for taking over as president of the Congress.

“I welcome Rahul for taking over. Rahul has a bigger responsibility now, he will have to live up to that," Yadav told CNN-News18.

Yadav, however, made it clear that the decision on whether the party with will go for alliance with a Congress led by Rahul is yet to be taken.

“We have not yet decided whether next Lok Sabha elections (in 2019) will be fought under Rahul Gandhi leadership. We will decide when the time comes," he said.

“Rahul should talk to all parties first before any alliance," he added.

He also said that despite Rahul taking over as Congress President, he will maintain his relationship with Sonia Gandhi. “Even though she has taken retirement, I’ll continue to be in touch with Sonia Gandhi. I will keep talking to her," Yadav said.

When asked about the Gujarat elections, Yadav said that while he was not asked to campaign, he feels that the Congress will win.

“Congress did not called me campaign in Gujrat. Probably they didn’t needed me," he said. “Exit polls are wrong, Congress will win in Gujarat."

Rahul was formally handed over the election certificate for being chosen as the president of the Congress unopposed on Friday, in a ceremony attended by the outgoing party president Sonia and former prime minister Manmohan Singh.
