In a surprise move Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi openly opposed the ordinance to protect convicted legislators which had been cleared just two days ago by the Union Cabinet. Making a sudden appearance at a Congress press conference in the Delhi press Club, Rahul Gandhi said, "The ordinance is a complete nonsense, should be torn and thrown away."
Here is how the political circle reacted to his statement:
Rajnath Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President: I would like to ask Rahul Gandhi what is his comment on the actions of this Cong led UPA government. Now it is a well known fact that there is a divide between the Congress led UPA government and the Congress party. It is a well thought of statement.
Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP spokesperson : Congress is known to speak on multiple voices, first they pushed the ordinance then they realised there is resistance so this step has been taken. Our leaders had met the President and demanded the rejection of ordinance. The timing of the entire episode indicates what happened behind closed doors. They first tried to push the ordinance and when they faced resistance from the President, this step has been taken by Congress as face saver. This is mere politics.
Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Party leader: Rahul Gandhi says tear apart the ordinance, we say throw away the people who brought the ordinance. Rahul thinks that people of the country are fools, first they bring the ordinance and then tear it away!!
Jagdambika Pal, Congress leader: Rahul Gandhi has mentioned about party's line. He has expressed party's view but the ordinance is something which government has brought. We don't have any communication gaps.
Rajiv Shukla, Congress leader: We are with Rahul Gandhi
