Chennai: Taking on the ruling DMK over the issue of corruption and price rise, AIADMK-led Opposition on Friday disrupted the Governor's customary address to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, resulting in their mass eviction.
Dressed in black, members of AIADMK, CPI(M), CPI and MDMK raised slogans against the DMK government over the 2G spectrum allocation scam linked with its party leader and former Telecom Minister A Raja.
As Governor Surjit Singh Barnala prepared to start the address, Deputy Leader of AIADMK legislature O Panneerselvam began reading out a prepared statement, charging DMK with involvement in the 2G spectrum scam, saying it was of
"Himalayan proportions".
"The scam has brought shame to Tamil Nadu," he said even as Barnala and the ruling benches led by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi remained silent.
Panneerselvam, a former Chief Minister, slammed the DMK saying it had failed on many fronts, including inter-state river issues such as the Mullaperiyar dam issue with Kerala.
As soon as he finished reading the statement, AIADMK and other opposition party members raised slogans against the DMK government, stopping the Governor from addressing the members.
AIADMK MLAs then proceeded to the well, triggering acrimonious scenes for some time before Speaker R Avudaiyappan ordered their en masse eviction from the house.
Many members resisted the marshals and heated arguments ensued. However, the marshals physically removed the agitating MLAs, who included CPI(M) Floor Leader K Balabarathy. Some other members were escorted out.
Amidst the din, Congress and PMK remained seated. Barnala later read out his address, whose Tamil version was read out by Avudaiyappan.
