New Delhi: Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the remainder of his term. Besides, Meghalaya Governor Krishan Kant Paul has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Uttarakhand for the remainder of his term.

Paul will continue to hold the additional charge of the office of the Governor of Manipur, in addition to his own duties, till further orders.

Qureshi had filed a case in Supreme Court against his transfer in August. He had been appointed by the UPA government.

The Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Centre on Qureshi's plea questioning the government's nudge to quit the post. In his plea, Qureshi had said the government was pressuring him to resign.

The court had directed the Centre to file its response within six weeks. The court had referred the plea to a five-judge Constitution Bench.

The apex court had also issued notice to Home Secretary Anil Goswami who had allegedly threatened Qureshi to resign from the post or face removal by Centre. However, the government maintained that no pressure was exerted for Qureshi's removal.

Qureshi was the first Governor to move Supreme Court against the Modi government.

Earlier, the NDA government had sacked Mizoram Governor 87-year-old Kamla Beniwal, who had served in Gujarat and had a running battle with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the state's Chief Minister. Virendra Kataria, a former Congress leader, was also sacked as Puducherry Lt Governor.
