New Delhi: After courting controversy with his hate speech, Varun Gandhi has sought an upgrade in his security citing ‘family history’.
“In light of the current controversy, I would like to request that there be a review of the threat perception to me and my security status (should) be accordingly upgraded,” Varun wrote to Home Minister P Chidambaram on March 20.
“In view of the family history, I feel sure you will appreciate the gravity of the situation,” he had said in the letter.
Gandhi who had sought ‘urgent consideration’ of his request claiming the election atmosphere to be ‘volatile’ was replied by Chidambaram on the same day.
“The officer concerned in the ministry is being asked to look into the matter for appropriate action,” Chidambaram had said in his reply to Gandhi.
Meanwhile, after intelligence reports of increased threat, Varun Gandhi was today shifted to Etah jail from Pilibhit.
BJP has also demanded adequate security for its Pilibhit Lok Sabha candidate.
“Full security should be provided to Varun Gandhi and there should be no politics on this issue,” party spokesperson Sidharth Nath Singh told reporters here today.
He said the extent of the threat and the security to be provided have to be decided on the basis of the IB report and added that it is for the Centre and the UP government to decide.
