Will Priyanka Gandhi be able to stop the Narendra Modi wave?

New Delhi: There have been reports that Priyanka Gandhi is likely to adorn a greater role in the party for the general elections by actively campaigning not just in Uttar Pradesh, but in other states too.

Out in the streets there has been mixed response on Priyanka's new role. CNN-IBN interviewed people in Bangalore and Mumbai to know their take on the news.

"I think Priyanka will perform but, it will be difficult as Modi is very well established in politics," said a person in Bangalore. "I don't think Priyanka Gandhi can compete against Modi at all because Modi is more dynamic and he knows what the people want," said another.

However, others feel that Priyanka's age and her secularism will help her connect with the youth. "Priyanka is young and her thinking is better. The Modi government only thinks about Hinduism," said a respondent in Mumbai.

Others feel that Priyanka's strong family name and the support of her party workers will help her face Narendra Modi in the run-up to the 2014 general elections. "Of course, Priyanka would be a better choice and she has the power to go against him," said the respondent.

Sources say that Priyanka may campaign in Madhya Pradesh ahead of assembly polls in the state too. Priyanka is likely to hold a rally in Madhya Pradesh in October, say sources. Priyanka is also likely to continue to focus on Uttar Pradesh. This even as the Congress and Gandhi family continued to deny the news.

Adding to speculation was a resolution passed by Allahabad Congress committee asking Priyanka to contest elections from Phulpur, which was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's constituency. "We were discussing who should contest the seats of Phulpur and Allahabad. The Congress workers thought that the Phulpur seat has belonged to the Nehru family for decades. We unanimously agreed that Priyanka Gandhi should contest from the seat," UP Congress memnber Abhay Awasthi said.

In September, Priyanka, along with her brother and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi held a closed door meeting with party workers in Rahul's parliamentary constituency Amethi.

She had campaigned for the Congress in Bellary in 1999. Speculation is now rife if this is Priyanka Gandhi's entry into politics and whether she will contest elections in 2014.
