New Delhi: In its announcement of second-quarter financial results, BlackBerry has confirmed plans to release an Android slider smartphone, to be called the Priv.
BlackBerry expects to launch the device "late in the calendar year," with further details to follow in the coming weeks.
The company has previously made mention of such a device, saying it was to come out by year-end, but this is the first mention of the phone's name and confirms the release plans.
"I am confirming our plans to launch Priv, an Android device named after BlackBerry’s
heritage and core mission of protecting our customers’ privacy. Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform," says BlackBerry CEO John Chen.
The company is also planning the release of an updated version of its BlackBerry 10 operating system next month.
