No More Apps? This Smartphone Runs Only On AI And Nothing Else
AI is slowly becoming an intrinsic part of the tech segment and phones in the future might see them replace your apps. Here's what it means

Smartphones that we use these days need apps just like how we need oxygen to breathe. But the future of smartphones could be apps-free and we got a glimpse into that possible reality during the Mobile World Congress 2024 (MWC 2024) this week.

One company has used the platform to showcase a concept smartphone that is completely run using AI. That’s right, imagine a phone that doesn’t have apps and can operate using AI, that’s what the Deutsche Telekom have done in front of the public in Barcelona this week. We all need apps on our phones to make calls, send messages and even order food.

But the company feels that with the advancements in AI, these tools can be replaced directly on the device and this concept is a sign of things to come in the foreseeable future. The company’s concept device is called T-Phone which has an app-free user interface and this has been developed by the company along with Qualcomm and a startup called Brain.

In fact, the CEO of the company has claimed that people will not be using apps on their phone in the next 5 to 10 years. So how will AI replace these apps on a smartphone? The company points out AI will be capable of doing all these tasks and deliver results that are tailored for the user rather than dish out random content.

The telecom operator also mentioned the growth and evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) will ensure these phones can thrive without apps and function normally for the end user and their needs. We are already seeing AI making its way to phones in the form of Gemini Nano that is available on the Pixel 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S24 models.

You can expect more devices to get AI integration, including the iPhones in the coming years. So, it is not entirely shocking to hear a company show us a future where apps may not be the only fuel needed to run these devices.
